Foil embossing is a special type of print refinement that creates visual and tactile contrasts.
In this exclusive paper refinement process, color pigments are transferred from a carrier foil to the paper. A embossing tool is created for this purpose, which is heated for the embossing process. The heat and pressure transfer the color layer to the substrate when the raised areas of the embossing die come into contact with the material. This results in a permanent and smudge-resistant bond between the color layer and the paper, giving it a distinctive effect. Metallic colors such as gold, silver, or copper are often used, but the process allows for even more. A variety of colors and special effects are available. For instance, hot foil stamping on colored papers can produce particularly expressive effects.

Hot foils serve as the carrier material for the color pigments used in hot foil embossing. They are typically 12μm thin. One disposal option is thermal recovery, specifically incineration. While not optimal, this process at least gives the original raw material (usually oil today) a second life by harnessing its high energy content.
The embossing die transfers the design from the foil to the paper. To achieve this, it is heated and pressed with pressure onto the foil and paper.
